چکیده

We compare between the binary congestion indication scheme and the explicit rate indication scheme proposed for congestion control of ATM's available bit rate service (ABR). The fairness problems of the binary congestion indication scheme that arise when mixing long and short distance tra c are investigated. Our simulations suggest that the unfairness noticed in this case towards the long distance tra c mainly results from the di erence in the number of the traversed hops and not from the di erence in propagation delay. We also introduce a simple approach with which this unfairness can be avoided. This approach is based on setting the multiple decrease factor in an inverse relation to the number of the traversed hops. Sisalem:End-to-End Rate Control in ABR 1

Design and simulation of ATM-ABR end system congestion control

We develop a simulation model for the ATM ABR service, and use it to engineer ABR congestion control behavior. Although significant work has been performed on ABR rate allocation algorithms at network switches, little work has focused on the end system behavior, which we examine in this paper. The effect of the speed of links on the path from the source to the destination, and the connection ro...

Design Considerations for the Virtual Source / Virtual Destination ( VS / VD ) Feature in the ABR Service of ATM Networks 1

The Available Bit Rate (ABR) service in ATM networks uses end-to-end rate-based ow control to allow fair and eecient support of data applications over ATM networks. One of the architectural features in the ABR speciication 1] is the Virtual Source/Virtual Destination (VS/VD) option. This option allows a switch to divide an end-to-end ABR connection into separately controlled ABR segments by act...

Modeling and Simulation of an ABR Flow Control Algorithm Using a Virtual Source/Virtual Destination Switch

The Available Bit Rate (ABR) service class of Asynchronous Transfer Mode networks uses a feedback control mechanism to adapt to varying link capacities. The Virtual Source/Virtual Destination (VS/VD) technique offers the possibility to segment the otherwise end-to-end ABR control loop into separate loops. The improved feedback delay and the control of ABR traffic inside closed segments provide ...

Convergence Study of PWM Control of ABR Traffic in ATM

In recent years a considerable amount of research [1-14] has been undertaken in the area of congestion control and avoidance of available bit rate(ABR) service. Both the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the ATM Forum have accepted the rate based feedback scheme as the framework for ABR traffic control [1, 6, 8 & 15]. In the ABR traffic management scenario, each source attempts to...
